In October 2019 Wera Morawiec from ON Public Gallery team was a part of curatorial programme in Lagos, Nigeria during the international Contemporary Art Biennial. During the time she spent there she came across the work of performer and dancer SCARZ.

In 2020 we had a pleasure to show two dance movies by Dominic Promise Obada – SCARZ – in One Night Public Gallery exhibition: Edited by: SCARZ.

Dominic Promise Obada

Dominic Promise grew up in a slum called Ajegunle in Lagos, Nigeria. His childhood and young adult years were a battle, hence he named himself “Scarz” to let the world know that his struggles cannot defeat him, that he rises despite of, or perhaps because of, his wounds. He found dance at age 12 and since then, he’s always known it to be his purpose in life and the way he gives back to the community. Despite extreme hardships, he carried on his dance studies, graduating from Dance Deal Foundation at Corporate Dance World, Nigeria, in 2015. He received the “Most Improved Male Student of The Year” award.
Promise is one of 24 young African dancers to have received a 3-year scholarship at Ecole des Sables in Senegal under the leadership of dancer, choreographer and founder Germaine Acogny. He expects to receive his Diploma in Traditional and Contemporary African Dance in summer, 2020.
His training includes Contemporary, Ballet, Afro Dance, Hip Hop, Latin, Ballroom, and African traditional dances. He has five years of professional performance experience as well as choreography and production management experience.

ON Public Gallery team is also inviting all interested in helping the young dancer to support his GoFundMe campaign to raise money for completing his Diploma in Contemporary and Traditional African Dance in Senegal.
